His original publication of "The Angelic Avengers" in Copenhagen in 1944 may be explained by the state of France at that time, and the less oppressive conditions of the Danes, whom the British Prime Minister dubbed "the Gangster's Canary Birds". *** 'Pierre Andrezel, whose name appears on this novel, is described as a young Frenchman, born in Rouen 1915, and educated at Oxford where he wrote stories for English magazines. The back panel id slightly discoloured being mainly white. The spine of the dustwrapper is not browned at all. The dustwrapper is complete, with just some very slight creasing to the head and tail of the spine. ***In a very good illustrated dustwrapper, that retains the original publisher's printed price of 10s. Internally nice and clean, with just a meat gift inscription to the front free endpaper 'To Anna with love Helen August 1961.' No creasing. ***Very good in red cloth-covered boards with gilt titles to the spine. Dustwrapper illustrated by Michael Wickham. The book was originally published in Denmark in 1944 as 'Genaeldelsens Veje', and published in England, November 1946. First impression of the first UK edition, and first edition in English translationpublished by Putnam.
